Don't Cry for Me, 2019

Don’t Cry For Me, is made from a white pleated skirt that was given to me by my grandmother. She was relocating to a nursing home in Quebec and wanted to give all her grandkids something memorable before she left. The day before she left, I had a final visit with her. It had an emotional farewell and I began to cry. She calmed me down and said, “please don’t cry for me”. I decided to make this skirt into a textile piece, to pay homage to a relationship that is significant to me. I hand stamped, Don’t Cry For Me in rings, throughout the pleats, around the skirt. Creating this piece was a meticulous process, well worth the effort as I was preserving that moment we shared through the repetition. I was exploring themes of preservation and memory.
